The garden honours the British and Commonwealth citizens lost on September 11th, 2001 — and unlike most public parks, no city or federal budget maintains it. Every planted bed, every ceremony and every open gate is paid for by people who choose to give.
A conservancy fund would guarantee that care forever. Until it's fully raised, annual gifts are what keep this quiet corner of Lower Manhattan alive.
